Italy banning plastic bags

Italy has banned plastic bags!
Stores can no longer provide polyethelene bags to their customers. Instead, stores can provide biodegradeable plastic, paper or cloth bags, for example.
This is great news considering Italians use 20 billion bags a year! Imagine adding 20 billion plastic bags to landfill each year!

What do you think about this? Would you like to see a similar law in your country?

What is the policy in England? I always take bags to the supermarket and I know Sainsbury's offer recycling of plastic bags but many clothes shops use plastic bags. I wonder if they are biodegradeable?

Very insightful post : )

I don't think there is a policy :( I remember Gordon Brown giving a finger wagging to retailers about this issue but other than that I don't think there is any law on this. Most plastic bags aren't biodegradable but they are recyclable.
Thanks, glad you like it :)

Hey thanks for getting back to me on that one - it's certainly food for thought. It seems the norm now to take bags to the supermarket but much less for other retailers . . . x
